What You Has To Know About Tapeworms

Writing by Admin on Monday, 6 of February , 2012 at 6:15 am

Tapeworms are segmented, flat, white worms that live in the small intestine of dogs and other animals, including humans. These parasites, called Dipylidium caninum scientifically, can grow up to 20 inches in length.

Their survival strategy is to latch on to the intestinal wall and pilfer nutrients from the food the host consumes. As the worm matures, the tail segments begin to break off. These segments look like grains of rice and can be clearly seen in the faeces of an infected dog. The segments contain eggs that will propagate the next generation of tapeworms.A dog cannot become infected by eating the eggs directly, but only by swallowing a flea containing the eggs. The usually happens when a flea larvae eats the tapeworm eggs. Later the flea matures and lives on the dog.

The dog may chew at an itchy spot on his skin, and swallow the flea. The tapeworm eggs then hatch and the immature tapeworms attach themselves to lining of the dog’s small intestines. As the tapeworms mature they release their tail segments containing the next batch of eggs and the cycle begins again.

If you can get past the “gross out factor”, tapeworms are not actually harmful. These absorb a miniscule amount of nutrients and often cause no irritation at all. In some cases though, the infestation can be severe, and the dog may even begin to show signs of weight loss. It is therefore advisable to treat the dog if there are any signs of tapeworm.

The most obvious sign is tapeworm segments in the dog’s faeces. Many people believe that a dog that drags his hindquarters along the ground has tapeworm, but this is usually untrue. The more likely explanation for this behavior is blacked anal sacs or a skin irritation.

If your dog has tapeworm, the good news is that it is very easy to treat with either a vet prescribed or over-the-counter de-worming medication. Be aware though, that many of the commercial de-wormers contain a mild pesticide, and prolonged use may cause other health problems.

Veterinary treatment usually involves a pill or injection. This medication works by dissolving the protective outer casing of the tapeworm, which is then digested and excreted from the body.

Most dogs will get tapeworm at some time or another, but there are some things you can do to reduce the chance of your dog being infected.

To begin with you can have your dog de-wormed every 3 months or so. Most de-worming medications protect against other parasitic worms too, including hookworms, roundworms and other parasites

It is also important to keep your dog free of fleas, as tapeworms cannot be passed without them. Simply give your dog a monthly flea preventative and keep the dog’s bedding and environment free of these pests.

Bear in mind also, that although it is extremely rare, some tapeworm species can be passed from dogs to humans. And as they’re so easy to control, why take the risk?

Airedale Terrier Breed Facts

Writing by Admin on Saturday, 4 of February , 2012 at 8:15 am

Known as the ‘King of Terriers’, the Airedale is the largest breed of terrier. These athletic dogs can be up to 24 inches tall with a weight that can reach 65 pounds.

With its unique ‘square’ profile and wiry black-and-tan coat, the Airedale is an easy breed to recognize. They have a temperament that is typical of all terrier breeds, meaning they are dynamic, alert and ready to take on all-comers.

The breed originated in Yorkshire, England in the area between the Rivers Aire and Wharf. The original cross was between the Otterhound and Welsh terrier, and was called by a number of names, including Waterside terrier, Bingly terrier, and the Rough coated terrier

As the standard became more defined the breed was recognized by the UK Kennel club (in 1886), and became know as the Airedale Terrier.

By this time the breed had already gained a reputation as a hard working, trustworthy dog, and this saw it make the transition from a purely hunting dog, to one that became a favored breed of the police and military.

The Airedale Terrier is an active, independent and intelligent dog, although they can be stubborn when the mood takes them. They are very trainable, but bore easily, so sessions should be kept short, focused and fun.

In addition to their obvious value as working dogs, they also make great family pets. They are fun-loving dogs who love to be involved in family activities and particularly enjoy playing games.

Airedales are robust dogs with a lifespan of about 12 years. They do however suffer from some common health problems, including, hip dysplasia, skin problems and eye problems. Hot spots are a common condition with this breed, while bloat may occur if you exercise the dog too soon after a meal.

The coat is fairly high maintenance and must be brushed daily to keep it looking its best. In addition, you’ll have to take your dog to a professional groomer to have the coat stripped a couple of times a year.

This breed is a good choice for those who are particularly house proud as they shed very little. In fact, they are often suitable for allergy sufferers.

They ideal owner for an Airedale is someone who is reasonably active and can give the dog a lot of attention and daily exercise. These dynamic terriers are simply not suited to the lazy life, and will not do well in an apartment.

Dogs that become frustrated due to lack of mental and physical stimulation often develop behavioral problems, and this will definitely be the case with this breed.

If you’re searching for dog names, for your Airedale Terrier, I recommend puppy-names-hq.com. This site has 1000’s of excellent dog names, including a huge list of boy dog names choose from.

What You Must Know About Dog Worms

Writing by Admin on Friday, 3 of February , 2012 at 6:07 am

Dog worms are one of those problems that all dog owners will have to deal with at some time or another. These pests come in many shapes and sizes. Some are fairly harmless, others dangerous, even potentially lethal.

It therefore makes sense to be informed, and in this article we discuss the warning signs you should look out for, and the steps you need to take to rid your dog of worms.

There are actually several species of worms that infect dogs, including roundworms, hookworms, pinworms, tapeworms, whipworms and heartworms. The most common of these are roundworms and hookworms. These parasites carry the additional danger in that they are zoonotic, meaning they can also be transmitted to humans, with children particularly at risk.

If that’s not reason enough to get your dog treated immediately, then bear in mind that worms are a serious health hazard to the dog. They can lead to weight loss, diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy. In more serious cases they can cause damage to tissue, organs and the intestinal wall.

But how do you know if your dog has worms? The most common symptoms are weight loss, lack of appetite, a dull coat, lethargy, coughing, diarrhea and vomiting. The dog may also have a noticeable “pot-belly” if he has worms.

If you notice these symptoms you should take your dog to the vet for an examination, as soon as possible.

Fortunately, worms are usually easy to get rid of. Your vet may give the dog a de-worming medication, or you can buy an over-the-counter product which is usually equally effective. Don’t overuse these products though, as they contain pesticides, and can cause other health problems with extended use.

In recent years a number of companies have released natural de-worming products. These are said to be very effective, without the risks associated with chemicals, so you may want to give them a try.

So far, we’ve only spoken about worm treatment but, of course, there are a number of things you can do to prevent your dog from getting worms in the first place. Start by keeping your dog free of fleas, as tapeworm cannot infect your dog without them.

Additionally, if you live in a heartworm area, you should ensure that your dog receives a heartworm preventative, as these parasites are particularly dangerous, and potentially lethal.

You should also take care to keep your dog’s living area clean, and pick up faeces from your yard and garden as soon as you can.

One last point, always speak to your vet before giving your dog a de-worming product, even if it is a natural product.

Writing by Admin on Tuesday, 31 of January , 2012 at 7:42 am

You can keep pet rats as companions in your home. Just like any other pet, they too can help you empty your mind of stress. Rats can be pets rather than pests. Other people might not agree, but rats are actually cute and loyal. You can keep them inside a cage without complaining. They are quite species that are actually clean and safe. A spacious and a well organized cage will make your pet rats happy. Be sure to keep the area where they urinate and poop detachable so you won’t have a hard time cleaning the cage. Space is very important because rats like to move around. You can design your own rat cage or even build it yourself if you wish to save some money. It can actually be a fun activity to do. Some are using old cabinets and they have transformed them to an effective rat cage. Don’t forget to always feed your pet. Don’t let them die of hunger. Just be careful about male rats, they might be cuter but they constantly mark their territory making the cage, or your home stinky.

Pet rats are typically easy to take care. Taking care of them is cheap as their food do not cost a lot. The only problem is that you’ll probably mourn often as their lifespan is only around two years. To lessen the mourning, you can raise both male and female so you will always have a happy colony of rats in your home.

Best Dog Training Techniques – Getting Results That Count

Writing by Admin on Monday, 30 of January , 2012 at 6:09 am

dog training techniques is one of those things where the overall influence it has primarily rests on other considerations.

Anyone who has a dog should make the effort to train him, at least so that he’s able to obey simple commands. Training your dog is how you learn how to communicate effectively with him. While dogs that aren’t trained often develop a variety of unwanted behaviors, trained dogs fit in much more smoothly into their households. The following are some useful dog training tips that will help you make the fastest possible progress.

If you have a puppy, you should teach them to not bite as soon as you can. Very often, full grown dogs who bite were never taught not to do this when they were small. A loud yelp is typically what occurs when a puppy bites another one. To stop your puppy from biting, mimic the behavior of the mother or other puppy; you can also use human words so that the puppy responds appropriately. Your puppy’s behavior will be modified by doing this type of social interaction. Doing crate training can also work in your favor by placing the puppy in the crate when bites you. Instead of biting, the puppy will learn not to as long as you take care of this problem early on.

Handling an aggressive dog can be challenging. It takes a little bit of skill and to do something, you need to get control. Aggressive behaviors can be diminished in your dog. Here’s what you need to do. Avoid roughhousing, tug-of-war or other types of play that are likely to bring out the dog’s aggressive tendencies. Your dog could possibly become more docile through more social interaction with humans and dogs. Docile behavior in your dog should be rewarded every chance that you get. Finally, try to remain as calm as possible yourself, and avoid yelling at your dog. The reason this works is that dogs emulate those around them.

We trust that what you have reading through in this blog post in regards to dog training, likewise also the particular information regarding dog care, is going to be useful to you. Please keep reading a bit more for extra insights regarding this subject matter.

Although it was once considered acceptable to hit dogs, such as with a rolled up newspaper, this is something almost all modern experts on dog behavior would tell you not to do. You don’t want your dog to be afraid of you. Never yell at your dog. Always maintain your composure and discipline your dog in an efficient and useful manner. The best dog trainers are in control of their own emotions, and are therefore able to get the best response out of their dogs. It is a proven fact that dogs, that are afraid, will respond. However, aggressive behavior may also arise. The trick is to be primarily focused upon positive reinforcement techniques. If the dog gets out of hand, confinement and words are then to be used.

Your job is to find the right techniques and strategies to help train your dog, and animal that wants to listen to you. Your dog should be healthy. If it is not, this may be why they are having behavioral issues. Training your dog may require a professional trainer, especially if you do not have the time or ability. In most cases, however, the dog training strategies we’ve covered here will be effective at getting your dog to obey your commands.

Bullmastiff Dog Breed Info

Writing by Admin on Sunday, 29 of January , 2012 at 6:09 am

Originally bred to combat poachers in 18th century England, the Bullmastiff is a massive, muscular, and powerful dog. During the latter part of the 18th century, poachers were the bane of English country estates, and a dog was sought to assist gamekeepers in apprehending them. Unfortunately, the dogs of the day were either too vicious, or too slow, so a new breed was created by crossing the Bulldog and the Mastiff. The resulting dog was fierce, powerful, but pinned the poacher down, rather than mauling him.

The Bullmastiff excelled at this job because, despite its bulk it is also quick, agile and obedient. It is also intimidating enough to frighten even the bravest trespasser into submission.

Measuring up to 27 inches at the shoulder, and weighing up to 130 pounds, the Bullmastiff is an impressive dog, with a large head and slightly undershot jaw. The build suggests both power and quickness and the coat is short and may be red, tan, or brindle. The face and ears are normally darker in color.

Like many mastiff breeds though, the Bullmastiff is a gentle, loyal and affectionate dog, that bonds very strongly with its human family. They are known to be particularly good with children, provided play is supervised as a dog this big can accidentally knock a child over.

With any dog this size obedience training is a must. They respond best to strong and consistent leadership, and should not be allowed to take liberties in the household. Likewise, socialization with other dogs and with people is highly recommended. Male Bullmastiffs are very and may not accept another male dog in the house.

The Bullmastiff lives on average for about 10 years, which is typical for a dog of this size. They are affected by a number of congenital diseases including various cancers, progressive retinal atrophy and entropion. In common with most large breeds, they are also prone to hip dysplasia and gastric torsion.

Up to a quarter of Bullmastiffs develop hip dysplasia. Bloat, or gastric torsion, is also common and can be prevented by feeding the dog several small meals a day, rather than one large meal. If your dog does develop bloat, it is imperative that you get him to a vet immediately.

Grooming a Bullmastiff is an easy task. All it takes is a good brushing every other day or so, to keep the coat looking its best.

The Bullmastiff may look tough and rugged, but it is not an outdoor dog. Their coat offers little protection from the elements and besides, they are sensitive souls who want and need to be close to those they love.

Fortunately, they are well behaved dogs who are fairly inactive indoors. In fact, they can even live quite comfortably in an apartment, provided their daily exercise needs are met.

Good names for a Bullmastiff can be hard to find. The best advice is to search one of the online puppy names, sites, and my personal favorite is Puppy Names HQ. This site has thousands of excellent dog names, including a mega-database of cool dog names to pick from.
